It's not complicated just complex

Foundationally life on this Earth is goodness that is shrouded in a shadow of evil. Similar to the truth that light can exist without a shadow; a shadow can't exist without light. Evil is the absence of goodness. In that vein the world is getting darker, which in turn makes the light more pronounced and appear to shine brighter.

The two questions individuals must ask themselves 1. Am I a representative of the light/good or darkness/evil in this world, and 2. What am I doing to reduce the shadows and darkness to be a reflection of the light/good?

The concept is not complicated but it can be complex when your view of a situation is overshadowed by your individual desire  and self interest to attain instant gratification.

In light of the recent events (no pun intended) of mass shootings, political corruption, computer hacking, and much more I would highly recommend we all pause to reflect on the two previously mentioned questions and work toward doing good to one another. Love thy neighbor (goodness) requires you to exercise your free will as a citizen for the declaration of our republic to work. Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.

Daily Battle

Okay, it’s Wednesday and it was very hard to get out of bed today. I was talking to a person one day and after finding out I have buried three kids and a fourth suffers from a form of Muscular Dystrophy he asked me “How do you do it?  You know, keep going and get out of bed each day?”

I really didn’t know how to answer that question except to say it is a daily battle. Honestly, I can’t and don’t do it alone.  Have you ever heard the phrase “There but for the grace of God go I”? That phrase is based on the Bible verse I Corinthians 15:10.

Foundationally I believe the world is full of good and evil and a battle is raging between the two.  So, if good and evil exist there must be an arbitrating force that defines the differences between the two.  That force must be an all-powerful God.

I know you are thinking how can you have experienced so much evil and pain in life and believe in a God? You might also wonder, how can a God allow so much evil and sorrow in the world and be all-powerful?  Why does God allow evil to exist in this world? Those are logical and understandable questions to ask.

Have you ever done something wrong? Of course you have.  We have all done something wrong.  If God were to eliminate evil he might decide to start with you. We would not exist if God removed evil.  It is by his will that evil exist.  Your next question is why?

God wants to have a relationship with each and every one of us and he created us with free will and with that free will we get love.  God wants us to choose to love him.  You can’t force a relationship upon someone.

Evil is not something, it is the absence of something, and that something is God.  Just like darkness is the absence of light.  You can’t have a shadow without light but you can have light without a shadow.

With all that I said about my foundational beliefs you must understand the battle of good and evil is a battle where the outcome is already determined.  The righteousness of God wins and evil will be gone.  The battle is over the great number of free souls to make that forever decision to choose God.  It is God’s battle where I as a follower am called to be a foot soldier to share his story to as many people as possible.

The following Bible verse explains how this is not a conventional war of weapons but with words from God to change the hearts and minds of individuals.

2 Corinthians 10:3-5 International Standard Version (ISV)

3 Of course, we are living in the world, but we do not wage war in a world-like way. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not those of the world. Instead, they have the power of God to demolish fortresses. We tear down arguments 5 and every proud obstacle that is raised against the knowledge of God, taking every thought captive in order to obey the Messiah.

I appreciate the fact that I have family members, friends, and brothers and sisters in Christ to support me in the daily battle.  The Tuesday coffee prayer group, my Life Group and many others make this battle easier to continue the battle.

I was watching America’s Got Talent last night where I heard a 16-year-old girl explain how she is a survivor of cancer and then she sang the Fight Song.  The song has a line I love, which I show in bold below.

Fight Song
Rachel Platten

Like a small boat
On the ocean
Sending big waves
Into motion
Like how a single word
Can make a heart open
I might only have one match
But I can make an explosion
And all those things I didn't say
Wrecking balls inside my brain
I will scream them loud tonight
Can you hear my voice this time?
This is my fight song
Take back my life song
Prove I'm alright song
My power's turned on
Starting right now I'll be strong
I'll play my fight song
And I don't really care if nobody else believes
'Cause I've still got a lot of fight left in me
Losing friends and I'm chasing sleep
Everybody's worried about me
In too deep
Say I'm in too deep (in too deep)
And it's been two years I miss my home
But there's a fire burning in my bones
Still believe
Yeah, I still believe
If you are a fellow soldier in this battle remember the war has already been won.  Keep up the battle to communicate those words of love that God has provided.  If you are not yet convinced to become a follower of Christ I would recommend you read the following passages with an open mind.

Rom. 3:10, "As it is written, 'There is none righteous, not even one...'"
Rom. 3:23, "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."
Rom. 5:12, "Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned."
Rom. 6:23, "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Rom. 5:8, "But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."
Rom. 10:9-10, "if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved; for with the heart man believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation."

Rom. 10:13, "For whoever will call upon the name of the Lord will be saved."
